The episode begins with a flashback, to the 1490s in Bulgaria, of Katerina having a baby. Before she even gets a chance to hold the baby, her father takes it away. Back in present time, Stefan tells Elena to come over so Rose can tell her about Klaus. Even though everyone else is concerned, Elena is not worried about him.

Jeremy finally asks Bonnie out. Right after she accepts, a new student, Luka, appears to ask for directions to Luka and Bonnie make eye contact and there appears to be some instant chemistry there. Bonnie runs into Luka and his father, Dr. Jonas. Dr. Jonas mentions something about knowing some people with her last name from Salem. Bonnie says that they are relatives. Jeremy arrives and he and Bonnie start to play pool. Luka is still around. When he gets Bonnie alone, he shows her that he can make salt float – he's a witch.

Elena visits Katherine's tomb. Katherine reveals that Katerina had a baby out of wedlock, but was soon banished to England. She met and fell in love with Klaus. When she found out he was a vampire, he ran away with the moonstone. Trevor helped her escape because it turns out he was in love with her. He tells her to drink Rose's blood so she doesn't die. Katerina hangs herself instead. Rose, Katherine, and Trevor have been running from Klaus ever since. Klaus has already killed Katerina's entire family. Katherine offers Elena eternal life eternal life and slits her wrist. Elena does not accept. Stefan runs to the tomb and finds Elena and takes her home. She realizes that, being the doppelganger, she is the one that is putting everyone else in jeopardy.

Damon and Rose go find Rose's friend, Slater, who might be able to help them find Klaus. Damon tells Slater that Elijah is dead, and Slater says that he cannot help them. Elijah turns out to be outside of the café and breaks the windows, which causes Rose and Slater to burn. Damon's ring keeps him safe, and saves Rose. She and Damon return to the mansion and end up hooking up. Rose receives a call from Slater telling her that only the moonshine and a witch is needed to break the curse, which is actually a lie. Slater compels Slater to tell this lie. Afterward, Slater kills himself. We discover that Dr. Jonas and Elijah are working together.
